Archbishop Chrysostomos, whose decision to recognize the OCU caused tension and a threat of schism within the Cypriot Orthodox Church, insists on his righteousness.

The Primate of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, Archbishop Chrysostomos, said that he "has no interest" in the opinion of the members of the Holy Synod regarding the OCU. He said this in an interview with a local newspaper, Romfea reports.

Thus, when asked to comment on the situation around the recognition of the OCU, which some members of the Synod categorically oppose, the Cypriot Primate insisted on his position: "The Russians are wrong."

“I explained to them (to the members of the Synod – Ed.), they did not want to understand. I don’t’ care," specified Archbishop Chrysostomos.

Let us remind you that the Holy Synod of the Cypriot Church held two sessions on the issue of the OCU. On November 25, 2020, by a margin of 3 votes (with one abstention), the Synod supported the decision of Archbishop Chrysostomos to commemorate Epiphany Dumenko.

A number of Cypriot bishops publicly opposed to this decision, explaining this by the impossibility of reconciling their conscience with the division of Orthodoxy.
