“At this historic moment when Syria is undergoing a new period of transition, we address the public with a message of love and hope,” reads a joint statement by Patriarch John X of Antioch, Patriarch Youssef I Absi of Melkite, and Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II of the Syriac Orthodox Church. The appeals from Damascus were published on the official Facebook page of Antiochpatriarchate on 29 December 2024.
The statement outlines the important role of Christians in promoting national reconciliation, advocating for economic aid, promoting constitutional reform, and maintaining hope for Syria's future. Stressing the need for unity, the Church leaders called for a “comprehensive national dialogue” to restore social cohesion and strengthen Syria's identity as a diverse and inclusive nation. They stressed the importance of dialogue workshops and community-initiated projects to promote trust, coexistence and reconciliation.
The statement also called on the international community to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Syria. “These sanctions have negatively affected Syrian citizens across all social strata,” they said, drawing attention to the devastating impact on both local communities and neighbouring countries struggling with migration crises.
Addressing constitutional reform, the patriarchs emphasised the need to respect human rights and the rule of law. “Drafting a new constitution that reflects the aspirations of Syrians is key to building a modern and democratic state,” the statement reads.
The religious leaders stressed the importance of establishing a secular state that respects diversity and maintains neutrality towards religion. “The new Syria must remain united and serve as a model of a modern state,” they stated.
The patriarchs urged Christian believers not to isolate themselves or succumb to fear, encouraging them to actively participate in public life. They called on all Syrians, both within the country and abroad, to work together in rebuilding the nation. At the same time, they sent a request to the international community to support the reconstruction of Syria and lift sanctions.
As reported by KozakTv1, a video of the ongoing Christian protests in Syria was published on the Internet.
