The tragedy in Berlin looks even worse on Christmas Eve, - world leaders

The heads of states and governments of many countries in the first hours after the tragedy at the Christmas market in Berlin expressed their solidarity with the German people, reports «Deutsche Welle».

The leaders of many countries and international organizations expressed their deep sympathy in connection with the tragedy in Berlin, which took place on Monday evening, December 19th.

French President Francois Hollande said: "The French, along with the Germans, share the mourning for this tragedy that has affected the whole of Europe." Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve wrote on Twitter: «All of France is on the side of Germany."

The administration of US President strongly condemned the incident in Berlin. According to the US National Security Council, it is probably a terrorist attack. The official representative of the US NSC at the White House Price Ned said: "Germany is one of our closest partners and strongest allies. In the struggle against those who threaten our way of life and our society, we stand on the side of Berlin." Washington expressed its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the tragedy in Berlin looks even worse because it happened on Christmas Eve, with which many people associate peace and quiet. "We are full of mourning for the victims and wish strength to all the rescue forces working on this difficult night," said Juncker.

As reported earlier, on Monday evening, a truck plowed into the crowd of people at the Christmas market in the centre of Berlin, which is located close to the Gedächtniskirche church. The so-called "Islamic State" (IS) militant organization on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack, in which 12 people were killed, 48 people got injures of varying severity, several stalls were destroyed. Law enforcement authorities established that there were two people in the truck that drove 50-80 meters along the market place. A Polish man, who was in the passenger seat of the crashed truck, was found shot dead at the scene. Another suspect was detained near the terrorist attack scene.
